Brandon Sanderson is an American published author known for writing in the genres of science fiction and high fantasy.

Brandon Winn Sanderson was born December 19, 1975. Many readers known him for creating the Cosmere fictional universe. Many of his fantasy books are set in this universe, from The Stormlight Archive to the Mistborn series.

He has also written many series for young adults, such as the Skyward series, The Reckoners, and the Alcatraz series. He also was tapped to finish The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. He also has come up with different fantasy stories in graphic novel form, such as Dark One and White Sand.

Brandon also came up with Sanderson’s Laws of Magic. He also brought back the idea of hard and soft magic. He also began a podcast in 2008 called Writing Excuses, which he shares with fellow writer Dan Wells and Howard Tayler, a cartoonist. The rights to the Cosmere universe were licensed by DMG Entertainment in 2016, but the rights lapsed back to the author.

Brandon was born in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was the oldest of four kids. While a teenager, he became very interested in high fantasy novels, inspiring him to write his own stories. He graduated high school in 1994, then attending Brigham Young University majoring in biochemistry. He left for two years to serve as a missionary volunteer, serving in South Korea for the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 1997.

Once that was done, he went back to school but switched over to English literature as his major. He took a job as a night auditor at a Utah hotel because it let him write while also working. He also was roommates with future Jeopardy! champ Ken Jennings before he was famous. He graduated in 2000 from BYU with his Bachelor of the Arts. He kept on there as a graduate student, graduating in 2005 with an M.A. in English with an emphasis on creative writing. While at college, he was on the staff of a speculative fiction magazine called Leading Edge and was editor-in-chief for a year.

He married his wife Emily Bushman in 2006. She is a teacher of ESL as well as English and Spanish. They both attended the same school. She also would become his business manager. The couple share three sons, living in American Fork, Utah.

The author wrote a lot while studying in college. By 2003, he had composed a dozen novels. None of them had been accepted to be published at that point. While enrolled in a graduate program, an editor for Tor Books got in touch with him that wanted one of his books. It was Elantris, which he had submitted over a year prior. The book was published in 2005 and was received well. Then Mistborn: The Final Empire was published in 2006, the first in the Mistborn trilogy. The second book was published in 2007, and the third book, The Hero of Ages, came out in 2008.

Sanderson also penned a children’s book called Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians, about a young boy that is good at breaking things and takes on bad librarians that want to take over the world. His laws of magic book was published in 2007, with two more coming out in 2012 and 2013.5 In 2008, the second book of the Alcatraz series came out, called Alcatraz Versus the Scrivener’s Bones.

He had the honor of being chosen by Robert Jordan’s wife and editor to finish the last books in his popular The Wheel of Time series after Jordan had passed away. She asked him to help complete the books after reading The Final Empire, his first Mistborn book. It was announced that three books would come out to complete the series. The first was The Gathering Storm, which became a number one best seller on the New York Times for hardcover fiction. Then came Towers of Midnight, hitting number one on the list, and closing out with A Memory of Light.

Many more of Sanderson’s books have come out since then. Warbreaker came out in 2009, which appeared for the first time on the author’s website while he was penning the book starting in 2006. That year, the third book in the Alcatraz series came out. In 2010, The Way of Kings was published, which was planned to be the first of a ten=book series known as The Stormlight Archive. The fourth novel in the Alcatraz series came out not too long after.

The author finished a novella e-book based on the video game Infinity Blade called Infinity Blade: Awakening. He would also publish a follow-up novel in his Mistborn series in 2011 called Mistborn: The Alloy of Law. The book came out at number nine on the New York Times Best Seller list for print and e-book.

In 2012, he published short works such as the science fiction novella Legion and another called The Emperor’s Soul. He also published two new series for young adults in 2013, The Rithmatist and Steelheart, the debut of The Reckoners series. His second Stormlight Archive book was published in 2014 and is titled Words of Radiance.

Also that year, Legion: Skin Deep came out. It became a preliminary nominee for the Hugo Awards in 2015 but did not end up making it to the last ballot. He did, however, win a Whitney Award in 2015 for his book Firefight, the second in The Reckoners series. It came in eighth for the Goodreads Choice Awards in the young adult fantasy and science fiction category. It also was a finalist for Young Adult Novel for an AML Award in 2015.

His book Mistborn: Shadows of Self won a best novel Neffy Award in 2017. It also came in third for fantasy category at the Goodreads Choice Award in2 015 and was a finalist for the 2015 Whitney Awards in the category of best speculative fiction. It also was a nominee for the Gemmell Legend Award in 2016.

More books would come out from the author, including another Mistborn book (The Banks of Mourning) and Calamity, the third and last book in the Reckoners series. His first graphic novel came out in 2016, a collaboration with fellow artist Rik Hoskin called White Sand. It is set up to be a trilogy. His fifth book in the Alcatraz series came out in 2016.

His Cosmere universe was optioned in 2016 by DMG Enteratinment. An anthology of short stories set in the universe as well as novellas came out in November of 2016 called Arcanum Unbounded: A Cosmere Collection. Also to come out was Oathbringer in 2017, the third book of The Stormlight Archive. In 2018, Skyward came out, followed by Starsight in 2019. He also published The Original with another author and in 2020 Rhythm of War, a Stormlight book, came out. He also started a podcast in 2021 with Dan Wells called Intentionally Blank. He also came up with much of the content for Moonbreaker, a 2022 video game.
