15 Minute Sugar Pizza Donut Recipe - This Is How I Cook (1)

A few years ago Hanukkah began on Thanksgiving. It was one of our best feasts ever.

For dessert we made pumpkin brulee and accompanied them with these easy 15 Minute Sugar Donuts.

Giada, you know Giada, featured them on her show and I was bound and determined to make them.

This sugar donuts pizza dough recipe was devoured within seconds and I really had no photos. (If you want to see the original post, take a look.)

I figured it was time to remedy this and so I got out the frying pan and the oil and made these today.

15 Minute Sugar Pizza Dough Donuts are divine.

I’m not going to tell you they are like a yeast raised donut, but I’m sure you won’t mind that I’m saving you a few hours, right?

So go find your favorite refrigerated white pizza dough, (not out of the tube) and let’s get this party started.

I have found differences with different doughs, so choose the one you like best.

Let it come to room temperature and then it’s a matter of following the directions below. You won’t be sorry.

Save the oil and use it again because you really will want to make these again!

And no, this does not make a greasy mess of your stovetop. Really.

this …

So why pizza dough donuts?

Hanukkah is traditionally the time we eat fried foods. I mean how lucky are we?

We actually have a holiday where the traditional foods are fried. Trust me, I’m not complaining.

So to put it in a nutshell… there is actually a betting game during Hanukkah where the kids always bet nuts!

During the second century BC (which is a very long time ago) the Maccabeans regained control of the Second Temple that had been destroyed by the Greeks and Syrians.

To reconsecrate the temple they needed oil to light the eternal light. (If you ever go to a temple you will always see a light burning in the sanctuary).

They had enough oil for one day, but miraculously the candle stayed lit for eight days, during which time the Jews were able to procure more.

That is why we celebrate Hanukkah for 8 nights.

And that is why we eat fried food. Get it? Oil. It’s always about oil!

Hanukkah is considered a minor holiday but living where Christmas is a major holiday, I think Hanukkah has grown in stature.

In any case, it is a fun holiday to celebrate.

There are games such as the spinning of the dreidel where we bet nuts or chocolate coins, and sing many songs, though Irving Berlin did not write them.

And then there is eating. Yes, this is why we eat fried potato latkes and fried donuts.

The traditional donut is one filled with jelly, but I much prefer them unfilled, however these donuts can easily be filled if you choose.

So let’s quit fooling around. Don’t make pizza tonight.

Make donuts. Giada is never wrong!

Description

These 15 Minute Donuts are easily made from refrigerated pizza dough. You will be amazed at how good they are!

Ingredients

Scale

1 bag of white pizza dough from your favorite market at room temperature
Fine Sugar or Cinnamon Sugar or Powdered Sugar for rolling donuts in
Flour (For dusting)
Canola or Olive Oil
Olive Oil

Using a large nonstick skillet, pour oil into about a 1 inch depth. Heat to about 350 or until a piece of pizza dough sizzles.

While oil is heating, place your pizza dough on a large jelly roll pan. Dust the pan with flour. Using your hands, flatten the dough until about 1/2″ thick. Cut out rounds with a little shot glass.

Place dough rounds in hot oil and fry about 45 seconds on each side. Do not crowd them. I use a timer. Do not let them brown. Place on paper plate or paper towel to blot off the oil. Throw in a large bag with super fine sugar and coat them well. Serve warm.

Instructions

Take out a jelly roll pan and flour it lightly. Open the package of dough and let it rest on the floured pan while it comes to room temperature.

Using my hands, I flattened the dough and made little donut holes, using a shot glass. I then formed them into little balls and placed them in the hot oil. If the dough is still cold to the touch, place pan in a warm place while the oil is heating.

I used a 12″ cast iron skillet to fry these. Using canola or olive oil, fill the skillet with about 3/4″ of oil. Heat on medium high until the oil is hot. I test this with the end of a wooden chopstick. Place the tip in the oil and when little bubbles of oil appear the oil is hot enough.

Depending on the size of your donut balls and without crowding the skillet, fry each side from 30-40 seconds or until each donut is slightly gold. They will puff up and get larger as they fry. Do not fry until deep golden or they will be crispy.

Let drain briefly on a paper towel and then roll in cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar. Enjoy!
